Eek, this is going to be one of those tough questions as it's more opinion than anything!. I'm going to assume you're talking about DSLRs!. My answer to this would be: neither are better!. Each one has its own qualities that you may or may not value!.

For instance, the Nikons typically are larger than the Canons (least in the 4XXD and the D4X series, which are the entry-levels)!. Most people would find the Nikon to be more comfortable to use than the Canon!. It should also be noted that most people find the kit lens that comes with the Nikon to be better quality than the kit lens that comes with the Canon!.

The Canons typically have better color reproduction and better overall picture quality!.

The Nikons are compatible with all of the Nikon lenses you can find (well, almost all)!. Even if your camera doesn't have an auto-focus motor, you can still use the old lenses (just have to manually focus them)!. Canon changed their lens mount a while ago (I believe in the 80's), which makes non-EOS lenses not compatible with the EOS cameras!. Not a big deal if you're just starting out and have no lenses!.

But, whatever you do, don't take my word for it!. I'd suggest you check out reviews for each camera you're looking at and make an informed decision!. also, try each camera out! Go to the store and make sure that the camera feels good in your hands!. Make sure that you like where all of the controls are and don't be afraid to change around some settings!. As far as point and shoot go, I love Canon! I've had several cameras and my Canons have always held up wonderfully, taken amazing photos, and been very user friendly!.

With SLRs, I prefer Nikon!. Nikons are amazing and have the best lenses by far!. I have always been very happy with Nikon SLRs!.

It seems like Canon and Nikon have realized that one is better at the other!.!.!. Canon seems to spend more time, money, ads on their point and shoots, and Nikon spends all their time, money, etc!. on SLRs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For point-and-shoots, Canon is much, much, much better than Nikon!.

For SLRs, this is just my opinion, but i prefer Nikon, although I do have more experience with Nikon SLRs!.

But again, it is a matter of personal preference!. They all have different styles, and everyone's opinion will be different!.

And either way, Canon and Nikon are the 2 leading camera brands, they are both great!
