Question: Wedding photography!?
When the bride and groom are walking out of the register office and everyone is throwing confetti on them, what would be the best aperture to use in aperture priority mode!? I was thinking f11, with it being outdoors, but that would only give me a shutter speed of about 1/160!. Is that fast enough!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best thing to do is experiment!. You probably can't set up at the court house, but pick a similar location and have some one walk toward you and throw confetti up in the air!. See what aperture settings work well!.

I assume by your post that you realize the higher your F stop the more that every thing's going to be in focus!. And as long as you're holding the camera steady 1/160th is going to be a fast enough you shouldn't get any motion blur!.

Don't forget though, that clouds may come up and change your lighting at the last second so be prepaird to change things around if it pushes your shutter speed too low!. The absolute lowest you want to go is 1/60th but you'd be better off a bit faster than that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would advise against shooting in aperture priority mode indoors!. If you are not vigilant, your shutter speed could drop too low and you will have blurry images!. Outdoors it really depends on the light and how much you want to be in focus!. If freezing (or not) of the confetti is the important thing here, I would shoot in shutter priority or manual!. I would think that a shutter speed of 1/250 would be enough to freeze the confetti enough unless it's being fired from a cannon!. You should be able to have f/8, and still have a decent DOF!. Use a slower shutter speed to show movement in the confetti!. If you have time, try one with rear synch flash for a possibly interesting effect!.!. Honestly, this is probably one time where you can set the camera on program and bang away!. If you're going from dark into daylight, don't forget to set your ISO!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To answer this question, you need some things to consider:

If you can get a good exposure at f11@1/160 you should be able to "freeze" most normal action and maintain a decent depth-of-field (amount in focus in front and behind subject)!. However if the couple is running, it might be difficult to catch them in focus!.

If you use f5!.6, that would give you approximately 1/640 of a second (using the "law of reciprocity") but that might not allow you to be precise in your focus!. You definitely would "freeze" more action, and probably even the confetti, and the slightly narrower depth-of-field would isolate the subjects better from the out of focus background!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best thing to do at this stage is to not shoot the wedding unless you have loads of wedding experience!. Go intern at a private wedding studio and assist a pro before doing it solo or the results could be catastrophic!. also I would register for a class in photography!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since the lighting outside continuously changes and the shutter speed is more important to you, set your camera on shutter speed priority (Tv)!. That way you won't have to worry about adjusting your aperture to meet your shutter speed!. I often set the shutter speed to 1/250 for that kind of shot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The higher the number( smaller the opening) the more backgroud is focused!. The faster the shutter speed the better your will freeze the rice or what ever it is they throw!. I used 250 shutter with F16 with a little flash fill in!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
