Well a semi professional camera will be big!. Semi pro cameras are all SLR's and will be about the same size as the pro models!. Look at the entry level SLR cameras from Canon and Nikon if this is what you are looking for!. They are not semi pro but are consumer models!. They will give you the same results if you are using the same lenses!.
Canon XTi or XSi
Nikon D40 or D60

I suspect what you are looking for is a high end point and shoot camera!. Try the Canon G9!. It has some of the features of an SLR but is small enough to fit in a coat pocket!. This is not a semi pro camera but is one of the smaller advanced point and shoot cameras!.
There are other good choices!. Stick to the well know names like Canon, Nikon, Fugi and Sony!. When looking for good point and shoot cameras don't worry about mega pixels they will all have more than enough!.

The most important thing for you to look at would be the optical zoom!. The more the better!. also look for some manual control (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You right about that the good cameras are big!.!. So if you want good quality, buy a digital SLR!. I use Nikon and recommend it, just look for they lightest!. One reason why the smaller cameras quality is not so good because the sensor size in it is much smaller than in an SLR and higher you go with the megapixel, the quality suffers! The sensor in these tiny cameras just can't handle all these megapixels!.!. I also have a Canon G9 and the camera noise is high to me (compare to Nikon D70 with only 6MP) at ISO 400!.!.!. So more megapixel does not mean better quality!.!.!. I rarely take the G9 with me, only if I really have no choice, I rather carry the heavy stuff than get a lesser quality picture!.!. So just watch the megapixel, You don't need the highest in it!! I have small Panasonic cameras (pocket size) and camera noise is high in it but they do make very nice pictures, if you use it outside, it's perfect!.!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The new Canon Rebel cameras are smaller than the full sized DSLR Canon cameras and cheaper also!. The Rebel XTi is around $800 with a zoom lens and is 10 megapixels!. The new Rebel XSi is 12 megapixels and about $900 with the 18-70mm zoom lens!. These are Canon's two BEST "semi-pro" cameras!. Good LuckWww@QuestionHome@Com

Don't listen to these other people suggesting the
Nikon D300 and D3!. Come one! If you're not a professional!.!. do you really think you can afford a $3,000 camera!!? Let me suggest the Nikon d40, d60, or even the d80!. The D80 you can get in a kit for around $1,000 with the camera and lens!.!. But if your budget is less than that!.!. The D40 or 60 is perfect!. Good luck! (I only suggest Nikon because that's what I work with!.!. =P)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Do you plan to make this a hobby or a profession!?

If you plan to do professional photography then I would recommend a Canon 5D, Nikon D3 or Mamiya RZ67

For a hobby you might consider the Canon G9, Nikon D300, or the Canon Xti!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nikon D300!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
