One is not better than the other!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Well, you can hardly say one way of creating is "better" than another, can you!? The mediums are just two different ways of expressing yourself!. But it's helpful for a painter - even an abstract painter who is concerned more with colour than accuracy in shape and proportions - to be able to pick up a sketch book and note down an idea!. It costs the price of a couple of coffees to outfit yourself with a small sketchbook and an HB from the local newsagent!. And if you're into colour (as a painter) about $5 to buy a small packet of children's oil crayons at a supermarket!. Fill the book up with sketches (don't worry about accuracy), ask yourself whether they would look better as paintings or drawings and take it from there!. Oil paintings seem to be highlighted as more "important" in the minds of many people!. But think of Georges Seurat, the French Impressionist!. Many of his most famous artworks were oil crayon studies!. Think of the drawings of Michelangelo and da Vinci's studies!. Watercolour painters use pencil just as much as the brush!. It puzzles me as to why people should believe that "serious" artworks are more likely to be paintings than drawings although this seems to be the case quite often!. To any artist, how other people view his medium is not relevant as long as it satisfies himself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Well, think of painting as an addiction!. In MOST cases what happens is the artist is so in love with painting that they eventually dont go back to drawing!.My mom is an artist so she trained me well so I was not allowed to paint until I was 16 years old!. Istill have to do 3 sketches a day even tough I paint!. So even tough you may paint you should still draw!! I personally prefer drawingWww@QuestionHome@Com if you have the skills to do both, you would then base your decision on what art is applied to , for story books, it may be easier to sketch drawings for story, then choose crayon for littles, pencil for children, and water color for kids, then pen and ink or makers for more technical designs, have fun,? !.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Which ever you like!. If you decide on over all fine art, and want to become a portrait painter, then i would suggest to learn to draw first!. A good book is (The New Drawing on the right side of the brain)!. Once you have mastered the discipline of drawing, then you take up painting!. There are many great books, and art schools, or you can just strike out on your own!.!.!.!.!.!. HEY! The skills it takes to connect your eyes, brain and hands in every form of art (sculpture, painting, etc) is thought to be learned from drawing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com I like drawing best because you can fix a mistake easier!. And with painting, you have to wait for the paint to dry to paint something else over it, which takes too long for me!Www@QuestionHome@Com For me it would be painting!.
