I vote for a DSLR, not a film SLR!. With digital you get immediate feedback from your tests and your settings are automatically recorded for you!. Plus you don't have to spend all your time developing or waiting for developing and printing, so you can hone your skills MUCH faster!. I learned more in two weeks with a Dslr than an entire semester of photo class with film!.

Then all you've learned will transfer if you move to film, if you ever do!.

Film slrs are cheaper, but a Dslr that's a few models old with light use will work equally well and not be too expensive!.

Start with the camera body and a 50mm 1!.8 lens, and get to work!. That's all you need to learn, and it's enough to do portraits with if you have a nice north-facing window or other natural light!.

The only other thing you need is a willingness to do the work to learn!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You need a 35mm SLR for example, from Canon,Nikon, or Pentax!. and then register for a class in photography there you will learn the basics of
Shutter speed
Aperature F-stops
ISO/ASA
exposure
Composition

All the skills you will learn with 35mm will transfer over to digital when your ready and make you a better photographer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think you should get a couple of remote slaves, at least one hand-held reflector, a decent photo program; Elements, check out some books on composition and photography from the library!.!.!.get yourself a tripod!.

As you progress and earn some coin you should invest in a nice film SLR or a FullFrame DSLR!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
