The Nikon D40 is a DSLR camera and not a compact digital camera (which is made to be more user friendly than the DSLR)!. It will not show you any picture while you are taking it on the screen!. It only shows it after!. There is nothing wrong with it!. You should look into the viewfinder to take your pictures!.

Yes, I must agree that you should look up your manual and understand your camera better before using it!. If you have any doubts on the camera you are purchasing, please consult the camera dealer before buying them!. If not you will end up buying a camera which does not suit your needs!.

If you still want a DSLR, most Olympus and Sony DSLRs come with "LiveView" which allows you to see the picture you are taking on the back screen of the camera, before pressing the trigger!. Or you could upgrade to the Nikon D300 or the D3 for "LiveView" function!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You must view through the viewfinder not the screen!.
The length of time the preview stays after taking the photo is adjustable but a short time prolongs battery life!.
It is an SLR camera & does not have digital preview of the image to be seen in though the lens, only what has been recorded!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

LOL!

Grab your manual and brush up!.

You've entered the big leagues now; you look through the viewfinder to frame the picture!.

The screen is just a resource to access the menu and to review images already captured!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is nothing wrong with it!. It is supposed to be like that!. It's a pro-sumer digital SLR!. Live view is not a function!. Sorry, it was made for the more professional user!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
