Question: Question about an original lithograph print, dated 1814!. Can anyone help!?
It shows an action between the French 32 gun Frigate "Surveillante" and The Britsh 32 gun frigate H!.M!.S Quebec, off Ushant, Brittanny, during the Revolutionary War!.

The print puts the date of the action at 1783!.

There were 3 battles in this area!. 1778-1781 and 1794!. Neither involved these two ships!.

According to other sources, this particular action took place in 1779!.
Why would the original artist get this date so wrong!?

Sorry it's a long question!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's possible, I suppose, that 1783 refers to the date the original painting was created and not the date of the naval battle!.

In that case, it's possible that the 1783 work was an interpretation of an earlier painting by a unidentified artist!. This interpretation, which apparently relied heavily upon artistic license, may have been a more compelling image than the original painting!.

And when the lithograph was created, a printer with poor grounding in naval history concluded that the 1783 date referred to the date of the battle!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because the artist wasn't there at the time of action therefore making the source unreliable!. The artist probably made the print in 1814 a long time after the action!. Many artists do that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
