Impressionism was supposed to "capture the moment" (before photographic cameras were widely available), and is to be appreciated as an aesthetical expression!. If you like it at some distance, so be it!.

Dali however has two paintings that HAVE to be seen at some distance!. One is a bunch of gray blocks that form a recognizable Lincoln seen away; the other has a couch, two paintings and blonde curtains that form Marilyn Monroe!. !!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. Up close you would never be able to make out the picture!. But from afar everything makes sense!. As for the term impressionist, it comes from the fact that their subject matter came from everyday scenes!. At a time when portraiture and landscape paintings were very popular the impressionists broke away and created a new style!. By applying dots of colour to the canvas they created an "impression" of the subject they were viewing!. They liked to work outdoors and capture everyday scenes!. Hope that clears it up a bit for ya:)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, I have a few in my home and as with all quality artwork, you have to stand close to it, tip-toe, kneel down, walk from side to side, this way and that, back up, step forward, back up a little further, walk side to side again, tip-toe, squat down and then, back to center midway forward, never taking your eyes off of it in order to capture it's greatest beauty!.

Or!.!.!.!.!.,

any combination of the above!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the beauty of art is that its whatever you want to think of it!. i actually like more impressionistic pieces but others like realistic!. its all in the persons taste!. some make really like the piece up close, some far away, and some both or neither!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
