girlbcc said much of it, but let me just add something: how much lead do you use on a typical drawing!? I will generally whittle out at least an inch of exposed lead from my pencils every two drawings!. Sometimes I use that much in one picture or less!. If I just used a sharpener I'd be using it every five minutes, and of course, sometimes the lead breaks!. So obviously, a lead holder can be a HUGE advantage (not always, actually, but often)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you dont have to sharpen the mechanical pencil!.!.!.!.!.just quickly refill it and you dont have a mess!.
