Moats were not just long pits dug around a castle, and filled in, like swimming pools!. Generaly, if a moat was filled at all, it would have been filled in with water channeled in from a natural stream, and the outlet would have let out farther downstream!.

But, not all moats were filled!. The deep trench would have been a barrier to any kind of assault!. Attacking forces would have had to slow down to climb down into and climb out the other side of a moat!. This would give defending forces juicy targets for arrows and spears to rain down on!. Certainly, mounted cavalry would have trouble with a dry moat, and, forget about any kind of seige towers!.

Add a few more sharp, pointy obstacles on the bottom of a dry moat and you'd have a pretty good passive defense!.

No one, really!. Unless there were bodies of men killed during battle, which were usually collected by their respective sides, the moats were left alone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
