Your D40 will not allow you to take a picture without a lens attached!. You will get a F-- error!. Why on earth would you want to try to take a picture without a lens!? There would be no way to focus and direct the light to the point were it would be properly transmitted to the image sensor [that's what a lens does]!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not familiar with your camera, but most dSLR's are not able to take a picture with no lens!.

That said, some (like my a700) are able to!. In fact if you put a pinhole in the cover you can end up with a very nice "retro" photo!. I'd suggest looking for a similar procedure for your camera!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It won't allow you to do so!. Otherwise, you'll get an FEE error!. Even if you could, this would expose the sensor to dust, and all you'd come out with is an overexposed, completely blurred image!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You will get a blurry image!. Nothing to focus it!. But with the exception of getting dust onto your sensor it wont hurt anything!.
