A relative had this huge painting on her wall for years of Michael with His foot on the throat of Satan and He was holding a spear or trident up, ready to push Satan into an abyss!. I recall it had many age cracks, and was in a gilt frame!.
I also saw this in a photograph taken of a Victorian parlor, smaller and a copy, this painting was apparently well known and copied!.
The question I have is this: her husband used to run stolen paintings for a certain "family" and ended up hiding in another state!. I was told that he himself had painted this as a gift, but the fact that his history, and that it disappeared after her death makes me wonder!. Can anyone tell me what the painting might have been, such as who may have rendered it, and if in fact the original had been stolen!? I cannot recall much else about it, except the background (in recollection) reminds me now of the old European types of paintings!. I do know it is not like the Raphael in the Louvre!.
