It's truly not as complicated as it may seem!. Another option that you may want to explore is painting on wood panels!.
3 to 5-ply hardwood (oak,birch,maple etc!.) panels!. These can be picked up at a local home depot!.lowes etc!. The benefit of painting on a piece of wood is it is you'll be painting on a smooth,hard surface, which allows for mega detail!. If you absolutely must paint on canvas but still enjoy the properties of the hardboard you can always glue (elmers) canvas to a wood panel and after it has dryed and is firmly adhered to the board, Gesso all sides,front,back of the panel!. Usually 3 coats of a good gesso is sufficient!.
