Really!? Sure watercolor's hard, but I like it!. I'd definitely suggest acrylic though!. It can look either rough or smooth!. It's water soluble so you can easily thin it out!. There are times it looks very similar to oil- without the mess! Once it dries you can't add water and have it come back to life like watercolor!. It's made of plastic, and generally looks shiny on the canvas but it can be modified with powders & liquids to be completely matte!. It's also pretty inexpensive!.
Have you considered pastels!? Some call them painting if you use chemicals to blend etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most beginningers (In schools and such) start on acrylic paint!. So buy this, in the colors yellow, white, black, blue, green, and red!. (http://www!.dickblick!.com/categories/acry!.!.!. You don't need any colors besides that to start out with!. Make sure you get acrylic brushes, but don't bother paying too much for them, just get ones that look nice and get the job done!.

For canvases, don't bother making your own canvas at first!. Instead buy already made canvas, that already has Gesso on it!. You can find all of these things at Dick Blick!.!.!.I suggest 18 X 24!.!.!.blicks has three options "academic" being the cheapest!. The only real difference here is the way the back looks, and how thick the wood is, it doesn't effect your painting, so go cheap to start out with!. (http://www!.dickblick!.com/zz071/20/)

Oil paint is actually very beautiful and wonderful to work with!. It takes hours to dry, so you can move the colors around easily and blend them fluidly, much MUCH easier than acrylic!. However, you have to deal with turpentine and all that, and its annoying to do with a beginner!. But it has a much different result than oil pastels, oil pastels are like wet crayons!. Think more like soft pastels, or watercolor pencils!.

*I'm not sure what rough or smooth canvas refers to!. I know that there is rough and smooth paper!.!.!.but not when it comes to canvas!.*Www@QuestionHome@Com

Oil is more forgiving and will let you fix mistakes easier than acrylic cuz it doesn't dry quite as fast!. If you use Liquin medium it won't be clumpy!. However, acrylic is good cuz you only need soap and water to clean!. Some kind of gel medium would be good to have!. Rough and smooth surfaces will work well with either!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have gone to many painting conventions and most are switching to acrylic paint!. If you want to start out, check with college night courses or even craft stores!. I took a great "Bob Ross" class!. also, many craft stores offer one stroke classes and it is a great stepping stone!. Remember, practice, practice! Paint is very forgiving, so enjoy!
