Question: What do I need to set up a remote flash on my Nikon D40!?
Here is what I am wanting!. I am a sub-amatuer hobbyist!! I have pretty much only taken outside shots of mainly cars and racing!. All of them have been taken in sunny weather and perfect days!.

I am looking to set up a small "studio" in my basement strictly to play around with and learn!. I am wanting to do this on a very tight budget!.

From what I have been reading online, to run remote flash you have to buy an expensive flash just to trigger them, or is this only to trigger it wirelessly!? Can this be done any cheaper!?

In short what I want to know is this!. If you were going to set up a studio and had a d40, what would you buy!? I am on a budget so I don't want the best of the best products!. I just want to know what you think you would need to make decent pictures with a d40!?

I just want the bare minimum of what you would need to make decent pics so I can kinda set my budget!. Im not as much concerned with quality either!. I will not use it very often!.

Thanks!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd use strobes rather than hot lights!. You can always see the results instantly in your camera!. (Bear in mind, I have seldom used studio lighting, so maybe I ain't the best person to listen to!)

Does the D40's pop up flash have a commander mode!? If so, you can command a SB600 or SB800 using the built in flash!. You can also get very inexpensive slave flashes that just fire when they see another flash!. I got one for about $20 from eBay!. I have used it for backlighting brides' veils several times with good results!. But they are not very powerful!. You might could use one for a hair light or something!.

I have seen beginning light kits on eBay for reasonable prices!. Calumet and B&H also sell lighting kits, with a couple of umbrellas and accessories!. You could start small and add more lights as you learn!. I'd probably start with a dedicated flash, a couple of umbrellas and a softbox (you can build your own) Then see where to go from there!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

buy some constant lights unless you know how to use flash correctly!.

EDIT: get a cheap set and try them out!? you can do that, you would be better off learning lighting with constants!. trying them out wont teach you anything except theres more to lighting than meets the eye!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.theres more of an answer than you can handle, if your for real learn on constants!.!.!.!.!.!.!.
