Question: Since we can see the objects on line, why do we need museums!?

I've had the opportunity to see some of the finest works of classical painting, often when some of these exhibits go on tour and show up at some local mueums!.

I can tell you that there IS a huge difference between seeing a recognized image online or, even in a high quality book, and seeing the actual painting, just a few feet away!. I am amazed at how those individual brush strokes, so clearly visible in person, can be combined to make the most breathtaking images!. Whether it is a Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Klee or Pollack, the effect on me is like a monsterous ocean wave washing over me!.

A two by three inch photo cannot compare to a ten by fifteen foot canvas!.

Don't even get me started on sculpure!. Do you have any idea how large Rodin's "The Thinker" really is!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

For one thing, you can't see things for their real size!. You are limited to the size of your monitor!. There is something unbelievable to be experienced when you look at a large scale painting, and you try to take in the size and the fact that a person painted it all!.

Another reason is just convenience!. To find everything you would find in a museum online would take a lot of clicking, searching, loading, etc!.

Probably the most important reason is there is something very special about seeing, with your own two eyes, something that you have read about, or heard about your whole life; or seeing something that has been on this planet so long is boggles your mind!. The internet can't give you that feeling, only information!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because there's nothing like experiencing the real thing in person!.!.!. to walk around it, walk up close to it, see the real scale and dimension, etc!. Often times you'll be suprised at an object's real size when you're used to seeing huge prints, posters, and images online of it!. also, walking into a museum and finding an amazing piece of art or history that is so rarely seen (including online!) is a great experience!

Let me ask you a similar question, so you can realize the answer to your own:
Q: If you can see and talk to your boyfriend/girlfriend online, why do you need to meet them in person!?
A: Because everything is better in person!Www@QuestionHome@Com

This may make a good analogy, to make my point as simple as possible;

We may have seen a picture of a curry in an indian takeaway menu and read about the ingredients!. It sounds and looks yummy!.

But tasting it is a whole different matter, with aromas, scents, tastes that are very pleasurable!.

descriptions and flat picture provide only certain information!.

The menu is never the taste,

The musical score is never the sound

The look of a fabric is never the feel

The picture of a kiss is never a passionate embrace

What we experience at first hand allows us to truly get a clear, good picture!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, you can walk all round them, sometimes you're allowed to touch them, and seeing the real thing in "the flesh" is very different to looking at a photograph which can have the colours wrong for one thing or distort the image in some other way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because seeing a photograph is not the same as seeing things for ones self!.

Museums can also charge entrance fees!. This helps pay for the objects upkeep!. Who would pay to see a bunch of pictures of antiquities!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, if we can see a picture of you on the internet, do we really know you!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
