I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I think those are called "illuminated letters"!? Here are pictures of what I'm talking about:

they are called illuminated letter!. Scribes in the middle ages used them to decorate books, and help the reader to understand the story, since few could read then!. the illuminated manuscripts were hand drawn and written, because printing presses did not exist!. it's only decorativeWww@QuestionHome@Com
