Neutral density filters 2, 4, and 8 give a 1, 2 and 3 stop reduction in light, respectively!.

Which is the best to use depends on your meter readings of each scene, as it will be different each time!. The brighter the ambient light, the darker the filter you will need to help bring your shutter speeds down to the point that you can cause that silky blur effect on the water that everyone likes so much!.

When square filters are used in a holder you can mix neutral density and graduated neutral density filters together to get your shutter speeds down where they need to be and to compensate for a bright sky above the waterfall!. The neutral density would give the overall reduction in light and the graduated neutral density would reduce the apparent brightness of the sky, helping to balance the scene!. Just remember that the affect is additive!. The effective f/stop reduction is the combination of both filters!.

I can't recommend the square filters and holders enough!. One set of filters will suffice for all your lenses, because you just change the adapter ring to match the lens and mount the holder!. It saves money in the long run!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
