Question: With clay, I know what a coil is, but would this example be called a coil!?
i'm in art at school, and right now we're doing clay!. and we need to design a project that includes a pinch pot, slap, and a coil!. i'm thinking if doing a simple small wedding cake!. i got the pinch pot and slab covered, but for the coil, would the little loop thingies i have circled in red in the following picture count as a coil if i obviously made them bigger!? or does a coil always have to be like coiled around in a circle or whatever!.!.!. HELP ASAP

No!. Your teacher will probably not accept it, and if she does, she'll be cutting you a break!.

The coil in ceramics is structural in nature!. It's a way to make a cylindrical object without using the wheel!. So no, I'd say she won't accept that example!. It has to be coiled around in a circle or cylinder-like shape!. You could probably get away with using coiles to make a square cake, but why not try coils to make a round cake!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Usually in clay a coil means that you roll out a long sausage shape with the clay and then you coil it around, joining it onto itself to make it into a shape, then you use a tool to smooth it!.
