Question: Can you describe the difference and similarity of charcoal and conte crayon!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
yes! Natural charcoal (not compressed charcoal) has a very smooth surface and an extreme variety in tone that depends on the pressure of its application!. This is because it's made from burnt wood!. Conte is wax-based, however, and tends to give only one tone per stick (so you have to use multiple colors to get different shades)!. I find conte to look pretty horrendous for the most part, especially when it's used by someone who doesn't understand its handling!. I stay away from it but I can't get enough of Vine and Willow Charcoal! so beautiful!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Give JenMussari best answer, willya!? I had one answer today where I had fun being rude to another answerer!. I know that's wrong but!.!.!. anyhow JenMussari is the opposite!. I disagree, respectfully with her opinions, but her understanding of the media leaves nothing to be desired!. I enjoy using conte stick!. I especially enjoy it when, having laid it down, I manipulate it with rags or paper towels and kneaded erasers!. What it is is graphite mixed with wax to make crayons!. Tonal work is possible with it, but it is much easier with Charcoal sticks!. Both do have to be fixed if you intend to keep your drawing for any length of time!. also, sometimes, the only way to get a conte stick going is to break it in half and use the broken end!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
