Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg hit big in the '50's but the pop artists definitely built on their ideas and they have remained contemporary!. Unfortunately Rauschenberg is not about to stay contemporary:

The Wikipedia article is an excellent place to start Yahoo doesn't like our citing it and is giving me a security error which won't go away until I take it out!.

The thing is, Pop artists were doing two things with their work: while they were representing figurative art in reaction to abstract expressionism, they were also reacting against abstract expressionism by using methods which made their work less gestural than Johns or Rauschenberg!. Thus Warhol used silk screening extensively in his "paintings" Lichtenstein used stencils and James Rosenquist drew heavily on the techniques he learned as a sign painter!.

Another movement of the time was fluxus, which included among other artists Yoko Ono and Al Hansen --- who is the singer Beck's grandfather!.

I haven't mentioned Red Grooms or Claes Oldenberg (or Op Art which is another hassle)!. Grooms and Oldenberg are important visual artists at the time, and are often called pop artists!. The thing is, while the scale of some of Oldenberg's pieces can be off-putting, both of them used their materials in a way that showed they were very sensitive to the materials they used (in Grooms's case mainly wood, in Oldenberg's case fabrics and all kinds of material) and the sense of old fashioned craft in their work has little to do with the other pop artists (Warhol definitely and Litchenstein probably -- I haven't seen enough other works -- were incredible craftsmen who made sustained efforts to hide that fact)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Andy Warhol was the most well known pop artist in America at that time!. I always remember his picture of "Campbell's Tomato Soup Can"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
