Question: Will the Canon EF 50mm F/1!.8 II lens be good for an XTi!?
and I am planning to upgrade to a 5D by the end of this year (unless they release a new model that I find intriguing!.)

So the question really is,

Is this a lens that will work and be useful with the XTi (with portraits as my base subject) and will it also work with and be good for the 5D (though I plan to get more lenses between now and then!.!.!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your questions are valid and this is a learning process (for all of us, you know)-so please dont feel bad!.

it's a cheap lens--as in not expensive, but it's sharp!. But it's not like an "L" lens (that costs ten times more)!. It works perfectly well with 5D!. It works very very well for stage work (unfortunately I don't have any photos to show you now) because it's "fast"!. The f 1!.4 one costs three times more, and let us not even go to the f 1!.2, which is, like, ten times more expensive!. Canon discontinued the f 1!.0, which looks like an eye of a bug staring at you, but it is $2,000 or something!.

Here is what I did as a tutor for my nephew!.

Left is at f 1!.8 and right is at f 5!.6

You'll note some vignetting (the dark corners)--some people think it's cool, but I don't agree!. It can be corrected with software but I left it as is!.

On the same day!. Just a normal view!. As you can see, (click on ALL SIZES to see a larger one)--Cheap and Sharp if it's used correctly!. :-)

I gave it to him!. He has Digital Rebel XT!. He likes it very much!.

It's really perfect for portrait for your camera as it works as a 80 mm lens--a short telephoto!. Open it wide and everything else but the person's eyes (hopefully) is blurry!.!. and dreamy!.

(Above is Canon 100 mm f 2!.8 Macro at f 2!.8)!. Not the same lens obviously but I am sure you can get blurry background with this little one!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it's an excellent lens, and with the low price, a great buy!.

You will be able to use it on the 5D, however you may want to consider the Canon EF 50mm f1!.4, it's relatively inexpensive and a bit sturdier than the 1!.8, and a bit faster!.!.!. the top of the line 50mm would be the Canon 50mm f1!.2L !.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well according to what I have read, icp(international center of photography) recomends a nice little 50mm because it is really cheap and the image quality is excellent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, this lens will work!. It does a nice job for how inexpensive it is!. I used to have one!.

However, I would like to point out one thing about it: It has far too much plastic in its construction, which compromises its durability!. And I'm speaking from experience, too!. As I said, I once had one of these lenses - until it fell less than two feet to a wood floor and all the plastic shattered!. (don't ask how this happened - it was just one of those things)

Which reminds me - the autofocus drive gear for this lens is plastic!. I know because I saw it!. Not very durable compared to the metal gearing of the USM motors!.

Since you say you intend to upgrade to a 5D (another way of saying that you're at least going to spend some serious cash on the body - the only way to spend more on a full-frame sensor in the Canon line is to buy a 1Ds Mark III), why would you want to skimp on your lenses!?

I'll say what I always say: buy the best lenses you can afford!. Compromise only if you have to!. Your lenses will outlast your camera bodies, if they are of quality construction!. The EF 50mm f/1!.8 II is not what I would consider quality construction at all!.

Having said that, I replaced my broken EF 50mm f/1!.8 II with an EF 50mm f/1!.4 USM!. Using the same camera body, I am more pleased with the results I get from the new lens now than I ever got with the now-broken one!. It is worth the extra expense to me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
