first it depends on your computer!. Macs are great for design work and animation but you can do animation in a regular PC!.
Adobe is the way to go for design and have several great programs but they are pricey!. If you shop around you can find a good price!. Get them in a bundle it's cheaper!!! If you are a student or know someone get the student price it will save you $500-1000!.
Animation programs it depends what you are doing there are several they are all great!. Maya, 3ds Studio Max, Lightwave!. Go take a class and see which one you like best!. They are fun but cost money!.
