No matter how many layers, I always save my PSD files as is!. Yes they are big files, but the only time you use a PSD is for editing with Photoshop!. And really, hard drives are so huge and cheap these days, that file size shouldn't be an issue!.
I would only flatten what you feel you won't need to undo, but leave important layers separated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Deactivate layers one by one to see which you don't need!. Copy some objects to where they will fit on other layers!. I always save as jpg and ship those!.
My favorite simple photo editor is Photo Editor, do an alt i i to resize photos to make them smaller so you can easily email them!. Photo Editor is hiding on your office cd (before 2007), it isn't included in the Typical office install!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I always keep my PSD files with their layers!. I might flatten a couple that I think i won't change, or that are not too significant!. But I usually keep everything, because otherwise there's no point in keeping the PSD file!. The resulting image is only a jpg or something!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I recommend saving all layers in one file, then saving a second file with only what you need in it for portable storage (thumb drive!.!.!.!.!.or whatever) that way if for any reason you need to change something that you need the other layers for!.!.!.!.you can always go back to them without having to redo too much!.

When in doubt!.!.!.!.!.!.SAVE EVERYTHING!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, always save the PSD!. its the life blood of the image!. click files Save as and save as JPG or GIF!. they are universal!. the GIF has less colors but is a smaller file!. Better Detail goes to the JPG!. I suggest thatWww@QuestionHome@Com

couldn't you merge down some of the layers but just not all of them!? that way you don't have to flatten but you can make the file size smaller and still keep the more important layers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Usually flatten the layers to reduce the file size!.

If you flatten before saving you can undo this procedure!. Perhaps you can undo flatten after saving too!. Try it out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes I make a folder and name it!. And even make and save the duplicate layers to put in there!. That way you can pick out and use what you want!. Never can save enough!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I just do a "save as" for the final image and keep the original intact!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
