Buy some books or surf the web for information!. Taking a class would be helpful but not entirely necessary!.

When I got into photography I had a compact digital camera and knew absolutely nothing!. Within a year I had purchased a DSLR and have since placed second in a few international contest and am getting work as a portrait photographer!. My advice to you is to read, learn all about camera settings and practice as much as possible!.

Before running out and buying an expensive camera, find out all you can about photography!. With the average DSLR pushing $1000, it would be a shame for you to find out this is not what you wanted!.

I would suggest studying more about photography!. Pick up a good used film SLR, which will help you understand the fundamentals of photography without dropping a few grand!. Take a couple of photography classes at a local community college, read up, and practice!. Hands on learning is a must!.

When you come to a point when you know you want to go further in photography, then consider a DSLR!.

First of all, get a DSLR if you don't already have one! Second, find a local photography class in your area!.!.!. you can often find them in community colleges, rec centers, camera stores, or photo studios!. Third (this is most important), KEEP PRACTICING!
