I would suggest that you try downloading the Gimp at www!.gimp!.org!. It is free, OpenSource software, and although not as full featured as Photoshop it is very good!. There is a very good support community, with forums and free tutorials, and a couple of books as well!. The interface is somewhat different from Photoshop, but if you've never used Photoshop that won't matter anyway!.

You can save the same kind of files as you can in Photoshop, so that is not an issue!.
