All of the other people have made similar and informative points, especially about it depending on what type of photography you are doing!.

To be a successful photographer really boils down to being good with the standards of the type of photography you are doing!. Somethings, like knowing about how light is used to reveal (or hide) texture and model shape, the basics of composition, etc!., are used across the board in all types of photography!. They aren't used the same way, though!.

Some types of photography don't require anything beyond knowing how to use the photography equipment to get the image needed for its use!. Copy photography, dental photography and others are examples!. Composition is still very useful because a well composed shot presents its information better than a badly done shot!. You can be absolutely horrible at art, and still be a good and successful photographer in these areas!.

To be a successful photographer where the artistic elements of the image are important is to be pretty good at art, but the art is photography!. I know more than one visual artist who is very, very good at what they do, but produce really lousy photographic images!. They aren't photographers and being 'really good at art' doesn't seem to help them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Photography is an art in itself!. Even if you can't draw or paint or whatever, the lens of the camera is an extension of your eye!. I hired many for our magazine and, they learnt to trial and error!. Post your pics and accept constructive criticism!.

Some musicians have learnt music by ear and became proficient and this applies to photography!. Practice makes perfect!.

If you are a bit creative, have ideas, good perception, sense of color composition, cropping etc!.!.!.then take the snapshot!. The main thing to remember is to let the picture speak for itself!.
The viewer has to grasp what you are trying to convey or what was the idea behind the photo!. Some beginners take tons of pics instead of narrowing it down to a simple few, but effective shots!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No matter what field of photography you are going into, in order to be a successful photographer you need to have a good eye for art!. Your photography needs to be able to speak to the audience!. That's what differs an amateur from a professional!.!.!. your ability to use the right lighting, composition, and show emotion!.

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes and no,
You should understand art!. As in composition, the effects of light, texture and so on!. You don't need to be able to draw and paint well!.
I personally can draw better than the average 10 year old but thats about it!. I went into photography because it allowed me to express my artistic side without having to be able to draw, paint or do sculpture!. If you have the eye for it then go for it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

cant hurt but not always!.

I know I am terrible at drawing so when I edit photos where I have to trace an object to remove a background or something like that it never looks right and takes forever a friend who is artistic in drawing does a perfect job in minutes!.

I dont run across it much so it doesnt affect me in my photography!.

Photography is more what your artistic eye can see and understanding how to make the camera, lens light and that make it happen!.

It really dpends on what type of photography you are doing as to how much effect it has on your style!. Portrait photography not much at all someone who take pictures and edits them heavily then yes!.

You must have an artistic eye and understand composition but it doesnt mean you have to be able to paintWww@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on what kind of art you are talking about!. You don't have to able to paint or draw, but you do need to be able to recognize the elements that make a good photograph good!. These elements are universal to all artistic composition, things like color, pattern, balance, etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
