Question: What do you think is the right age to purchase a serious DSLR!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
i don't know if there is any age, as such that is right!.!.!. i know some 40 year olds that having a nice fancy honking dslr is a total waste of money!.!.!. and i know some 14 year old kids that have grasped the ideas of composition and exposure to the point that they could do something with a dslr that would be worth looking at!.!.!.i think willingness to learn at whatever age is the key!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Jim's right about the use of the word "serious!." There are DSLR's and then there are "serious" DSLR's!. It's a sad world where one has to spend a minimum of $500 to get into an entry level DSLR, but that's simply a fact!. For pretty much many other hobby interests, this would gain entry at a fairly serious level!. "Serious" in the world of DSLR's is probably not attained for less than $2,000, including a lens!.

So, what's the right age for that!? Again I will agree with Jim and also AGK!. Nobody has any business asking their parents to foot the bill for serious equipment, so you are old enough for it when you can afford to buy it for yourself!. Parents can either help pay for or outright gift a D40, D60, D80, XT, XTi, XSi, etc!., to anyone who seems deserving, but that's just to whet the appetite for the serious stuff!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When you can afford one!. I don't have a DSLR but I have a couple of SLRs, mostly out of order!. I got the SLRs when I was about 9 years old, so I think if someone can afford it, that's a good age!. Well, I also think everyone should start with film before they switch to digital, I don't mean develop film or anything, it's just that the massively manual SLRs are a very good way to learn how everything works and what it all means!. Remember when camera's didn't have batteries, and half the time you had to make judgements about aperture, shutterspeed!.!.!. by guessing since you forgot the stupid meter!. Oh, and let's not forget no live preview and no way to tell whether the picture was good or not until you developed it!. Some of that stuff was bad, but ultimately I think it was good experience!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think the key word in your question is "serious!."

That answer is easy !.!.!. when you know you're ready for it, and when you can afford to pay for it yourself!.

Then !.!.!. the next part of the response goes something like this: When you're willing to risk both the camera and a piece of your skin to use that wonderful tool you've bought to take a photograph that pushes you and the camera to a point where you may or may not recover !.!.!. but you absolutely MUST take it!.

If you're THAT serious about photography !.!.!. then you're ready for that camera!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

when the person that will be handling it, is mature enough to take care of it, in the way it should be taken care of!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Any age as long as you or your parents can afford one!. The Canon Rebel is a good starter one at an affordable price for a DSLR!. There are some decent body and lens packages out there!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
