Question: Is Canons in lens stabilization for SLR Digital cameras better than other cameras like Pentax that has stabili
I like the idea of stabilization being in the camera which will reduce the cost of lenses myself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The system on the Pentax K10D works just fine, in fact it can work better than lens based systems because it can also rotate the sensor slightly as well as left & right and up & down which is all the lens based ones have, this advantage showed itself when photographing Whitby from a boat and London from the river bus!.

The big advantage is that every lens even old 42mm and K mounts are an image stabilized one, the camera prompts you to enter the focal length!. I've successfully hand held an old manual 500mm lens with a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second, it just works!.

I am a Canon user, (when I use digital), but I have to agree that it is ridiculous to have to keep paying for IS for a select number of lenses, when if it is done in camera, you have it at all times with any lens!.

The IS as part of the lens was an earlier technology than in camera design, so I guess you could say Canon has not really redirected their efforts to creating stabilization of the sensor!. Perhaps they will in the future, but then that will make their current IS lenses obsolete, so they are kind of caught between a rock and a hard place!.

What I am wishing some manufacturer would do is this!.!.!. since the sensor can now be moved for IS and for shaking off dust, I wish they would design in a portrait / landscape mode that would change the sensor orientation to either mode!. You would no longer have to turn the camera sideways for a portrait shot!. This would really be helpful as concerns flash, as the flash could remain in the proper location, much like using a flash bracket!.

The Mamiya RZ67 medium format film camera allows you to rotate the film magazine instead of having to rotate the entire camera!. Now that the sensors can be moved in digital, I wish this feature would be incorporated with them also!.

Sorry to go off topic, but it just seems to be a logical outgrowth for future digital cameras!.

There is an on-going debate as to which system - in-camera stabilization or in-lens stabilization - works best!. IMO, having any lens you own stabilized by in-camera stabilization wins!.

So if you choose a Pentax DSLR and buy a K-mount AF lens made 10 years ago its going to be stabilized!. The same applies to the Sony DSLR line when a legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens is used on them!.

I agree with you that its ridiculous to have to pay for stabilization and AF with every lens you buy!. I want the most features and benefits available for my money!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lens based systems work a little bit better, but the Pentax shift based Shake Reduction system does perform as advertised!. Just make sure that Pentax offers the lenses you're looking for - they have a lot of good stuff for general use, but their tele-lenses cost a fortune!. (If you plan on shooting wildlife, it would actually be cheaper to go with Canon/ Nikon!.)
