There is also the issue of pest control (insects or rodents) without harming the artifact!. An old robe made out of cloth will require different protection than a stone statue!. It can also be that the materials an art piece is made out of can contribute to it's own degradation, e!.g!. if it's not acid-free paper!. Likewise the materials of the framing and matting can contribute to the degradation of an art piece if they are not properly selected!.
