Question: Where do professional artists buy their paint!?
I have seen some abstract work from a professional artist and the paintings were huge!. It made me wonder where they get their paint!. I can't imagine that they go to an art store like hobby artists!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I make a pilgrimage to the Golden Paint factory in New Berlin, NY once a year for my paint, they allow you to buy larger quantities at wholesale prices!. The last time I was there they had a chatty and starstruck woman behind the counter who was talking about the custom orders she had filled for several major artists!. The other art supply companies probably do the same!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Usually professional artists dont really care about the store name, but they really do care about the brand of the supplies!. For example, watercolors from China are ok to start, but a professional will buy Winstor&Newton or Schminke because they have the finest pigment!. Papers likewise!. A professional will buy an Arches for $20 a sheet instead of a different brand for $4!. One great source is Michaels store!.!.!.which ranges from cheap stuff to REALLY good professional stuff!. DickBlick catalog is good but very expensive!. Ebay is a great place to buy from because its cheap and you can find brand names!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I go to a small local art store where I buy my brushes, but not paints!. The brushes are far better quality than the general hobby store brushes!. Its a small specialist store which does all sorts of art materials!. I suspect that the artists you mentioned may well use this kind of store!. However, if I am painting a watercolor, I use kiddies paint sets which needn't cost loads!. I use them regularly and find that instead of paying £40, I pay around £5 for exactly the same thing in a toy store but with a different name!. Paint is paint at the end of the day!.
By the way I am not a professional painter, but a relative of mine is a professional local artist!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I buy my paint everywhere at the right price!. I get a 50% off coupon, (local Sunday newspaper) for one item at Hobby Lobby every other week, (one tube of artist quaility paint)!. Other than that, you've got, Utrecht, Pearl, Dick Blick, Cheap Joe's, Daniel Smith, and my favorite Jerry's artarama!.com all of which carry artist quality material!. You need to buy paint that says artist quaity of the label or your getting student grade!. Good Luck! Have Fun!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know why they wouldn't go to a good art store like Dick Blick!. I get great prices there!. With a student discount you get 10% off and that ends up beating what it would cost to buy online with shipping!.

Dick Blick is the best art store I know of!. They have a nice selection and their prices blow away other stores like Michaels and the store on my old campus!.

The only other way would be to buy from local retailers or directly from the product manufacturers!.

I am not a professional painter but I am a graphic designer and I take traditional art very seriously as well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
