In college, your photo classes will require you to learn on a camera like a 35mm SLR!. You will learn how to expose, develop and print your images as well as the skills necessary to produce "professional" quality images, everytime you press the shutter!.

That means you will need to buy either a good used Nikon or Canon 35mm SLR or a medium format camera like a Mamiya or Hasselblad!.

Before you spend any money, talk to your photo instructor and get some idea of which camera will serve you throughout your classes in photography !.!. most digital classes are taught at the end of your major !.!.!. all the skills you have from your days using film are directly transferable to a digital body, the only thing you will be learning to do is emulate everything you learned in the darkroom, but using a computer program !.!.!. usually Photoshop!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I can highly recommend purchasing the Canon 40D or Canon Rebel XTI both 10 megapixel cameras for less than $800!. (body only)!. The Canon Rebel XSI is also just released and is a 12 megapixel camera for about $900 (including an 18-55 mm zoom lens)
I also have friends who own the Nikon D-200 and D-300 cameras which are wonderful cameras!. Be sure to do some reading in camera magazines, take a lot of notes on the specs of each one and make a decision before spending any money!. The are also some good deals available on e-bay for good used digital cameras!. Good LuckWww@QuestionHome@Com

If you want to go one step up from pocket digital cameras, I would suggest (it has manual setting):
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 digital camera, its dimensions are 4!.43 x 2!.84 x 3!.11 inch!. About $250
Here's a site for reviews and description for it!.

I like Panasonic because of its durability!. I have a pocket camera by Panasonic and had been dropped (not by me, and I wouldn't recommend dropping it) a couple of times, and it hasn't given me a problem!.

If you want something bigger and step up the digital cameras, I would suggest a DSLR:
Canon XTi (dimension: 5 x 3!.7 x 2!.6 in)!.
Here's a site for descriptions and price for a camera body and lens, plus memory card for it $629:

They also have a Canon that is not a DSLR like the Panasonic, about $330Www@QuestionHome@Com
