Check my set of sunsets on Flickr!. http://www!.flickr!.com/photos/samfeinstei!.!.!.
They are made with various cameras and even more settings!.

Motorola RAZR 1!.3 MP Camera Phone - 1/21 sec!.
Nikon Coolpix 4600 - 4 MP Point & Shoot (P&S) - Small Sensor
- ISO 50 - 7!.7 mm (46 mm equiv!.) - f/3!.2 - 1/40 sec!.
Nikon Coolpix 5400 - 5 MP P&S - Large Sensor
- ISO 50 - 5!.8 mm (28 mm equivalent) - f/5!.6 - 1/200 sec!.
Canon SD900 - 10 MP P&S - Large Sensor
- ISO Auto - 23!.1 mm (111 mm equiv!.) - f/4!.9 - 1/100 sec!.

Nikon D200 - 10 MP DSLR - Nikon 70-300 VR lens
- ISO 400 - 70 mm @ f/4!.5 - 1/60 sec!.
Pentax Spotmatic - taken so long ago, I have no idea about the settings!.

The shutter speeds vary from as slow as 1/6 second to as fast as 1/250 second!.
The apertures vary from as small as f/10 to as large as f/2!.8!.
The equivalent focal lengths vary from as wide as 28 mm to as "tele" as 111 mm!. Most seem to be on the "wider" end, though!.

My point is that there _IS_ no "correct" setting or lens for shooting sunsets!. You have to meter the scene and compose the scene yourself!. Decide what is important in your image and meter there!. Avoid putting the full sun in the meter area or everything else will be dark - unless that's what you want!. If it is a beautiful sunset, bracket! That means take a few where you think it is just right and then some over and under that setting!. After a while, you will have the experience to know how to get what you want!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nope!. maybe!. Sometimes!. Yes and no!. Depends!. Ok I was just having fun there!. Usually a wide angle lens is used!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When I think of a sunset or sunrise image, I usually am thinking of more landscapish type scenes, and those are usually wide angle!. But thats just me!. What your really asking is "what kind of lens do you think I would need"!. Since we dont really know what your tastes are I can head you into the right direction as far as lens focal length selections is concerned!. http://www!.fredparker!.com/vislize!.htm This may not be the entire answer you seek, but it's good information!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Every scene is different but telephoto lenses are often used in landscape photogrpahy!.

The reduced angle of view is useful for focusing viewer's attention on the main point of interest and excluding distracting elements!.

first off, most professional photographers dont take pictures of sunsets!.

You can use any focal length for sunsets, its just personal preference which one you want to use, and the effect you are going for!.
wide angles encorporate a lot of the landscape and the sky, whereas telephotos compress what is seen in the frame, and the disc of the sun appears larger in the frame!.
Personally, i think that sunset shots taken with a telephoto look better, whereas wide angle shots tend to have an amateurish composition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
