I know you said books, but I'll start with a website:

http://drawinglab!.evansville!.edu/

It's the Figure Drawing Lab at Evansville University and it is chock full of useful information for understanding what you are seeing and putting it on paper (there is NO substitute for a model!. Ask about figure drawing classes in your area!.

For making up the human figure, Dover Books has kept George Bridgeman's Constructive Anatomy and Watson-Guptill's kept Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Figure Drawing in print since I was a teenager!. I'll be fifty-three in two weeks!. Get them!.

Two books that were very influential during the seventies were Betty Edwards's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Kimon Nicolaides's The Natural Way to Draw!. While neither discuss anatomy they make you rethink how to depict it, and deal extensively with working from models!.

My art teacher recommended Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and figure!. It's also very good!. Jeno Barcsay's Anatomy for the Artist is a classic!. And believe it or not, the Late John Buscema's How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way has lots of good pointers on academic drawing aw well as superheroes and cartoons!.

I'm linking to an earlier answer I gave which mentions these books because it also contains links to them!. The link is in sources!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
