Question: What format would a "Scaleable" Logo be in!?!?
I'm looking for a logo for my website and business cards!. I might also want to put the logo on my photo images in my webpage!. Someone once told me that my logo needs to be scaleable so that it can be resized!. If I were to have someone design this for me what format would it be in!? JPEG, PSD!? If it is not one of these formats will I be able to view it!?!?

Thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first two people are absolutely right!. It has to be in a "vector" format, and that requires a program such as Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, or the free OpenSource Inkscape!.

You can create a vector logo and then save it out in a rasterized format that you can load on a website!. But you can't create it in Photoshop and then scale it reliably, because Photoshop is a raster based (works in pixels) program!. Saving as a psd or jpeg won't matter, they are still raster based!. When you scale them, you lose quality (especially if you scale up—enlarge— the image)!. Vectors are points, lines, curves, and are mathematically calculated by the computer, they don't care about size and resolution!. Thus you can take a logo created in Illustrator at say 3 x 3 inches and scale it up to say 6 x 6 feet and it will still look fine!. You can see how this would mean you could build a logo in Illustrator that would look great on a letterhead or business card, and then could also be used on a large sign for a business or a huge advertising billboard!.

Note that Illstrator files can be saved out as pdfs, which anyone can view!.

Hope that helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Vector format!.

A logo created in Adobe Illustrator (!.ai or saved as an !.eps)

That is, hands down, the best format for logos!. You can save versions as a !.jpg for web or PC use, but when you have to have things made or printed, you'll want a vector based logo!. Nothing that has a resolution (like anything in Photoshop) will work as well!.

Any graphic artist can help you!. There are a lot of message boards out there where people can get help converting logos too!. You'll have to look around a bit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I do all my logos in Illustrator because you can scale more easily in that program, but also because I can get clean edges!.

Other vector based programs like CorelDraw can also be useful for logo making!.

I usually make my base logo in Illustrator first and then copy it into Photoshop if I want to do any bitmappy things to it like shading or shadowing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
