I am not 100% sure what exacty are you askingm so I will answer what I think your question might be!.
First of all, may i add that Gothic architecture was present much widelly in Middle age Europe than from France to Itally!. Last year the school where I teach made a trip to Slowakia, expolring sm beautiful examples of Gothic architecture!.!.!.in any case, Western Europe sure has some most important and beautiful samples of this architecture style!.
The stain glass adn windows are the main decoration of Gothic architecture!. Inone way they give lightness feeling to the building, and also light can be asosiated with devine!. So first of all the coulurfull stain glasses have dcorative function!. Rose window for examle is the main decoration of every Cothic cathedral !. See and example at: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Image:St_De!.!.!.
Besaide their decorative function, stain glasses also present different scenes from The BIble and/or religious teams!. These paintings served as a narative (books in picture) and religious education to people who could not read (unlike today, in middle ages very few people could read)!.
These paintings and decorations can be made in different ways!.!.!.A master who was making them might like to use glasses of different coulour and qualities, transparence etc!. Or he might paint on a glass sheet with special glass paint and then melt the paint in a special glass stove!. These peaces of glass would then be surronded and connected with led stipes (led is very soft metal, and therefore can be shaped over a glass sheet with ease)!. see picture: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Image:Siena!.!.!. and in the end the whole stain glass window would be placed in a particular place of a bulding!.
