Desaturate (Image>Adjustments>Desaturate) is usually the best option (it just selects the Red channel) Greyscale dumps all the colour data, if you are printing on an inkjet you need the colour information which is why you get a warning screen!.

There are a load of other ways with more control!.

Go to the Channels and select the Red or Green or Blue channel, they're all give different results!. You can mix the channels in the Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer, but you have to make sure all the %ages add up to 100% or you'll lose tonal value or start to posterise!.

Try this;

Pull up two Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layers, rename the top one Film and just turn the Saturation all the way to the left (desaturate totally)!.

Rename the middle layer 'Filter' alter the blend mode to Color, then when you alter the Hue slider it will put a Red or Green or Blue 'filter' onto the image, just select the one that gives the result you want!.

Once you have done your B&W conversion the fun can start!. Use the Lasso Tool and roughly select say the sky and feather lots, the pull up a Levels Adjustment Layer and play with the sliders, you will find that you can alter the tones independently from other parts of the picture!. Then you can do the same with other areas of the picture!.

You can use a Curves Adjustment Layer to alter contrast on these selections too if you want!.

Opening the file in 16 bit Mode works best as you will maintain the smooth graduations in tones!.

When photo is acquired in photo shop 7 there are tabs up on the top of the window that have textures, color balance, and B & W capabilities!. You can also scan a color photo in B & W then use the PS 7 to print it!.

I'd use desaturate, as I find it works best!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Here's yet another option!. Go to adjustments and then to gradient maps!. One of the default gradients is BW!. Then adjust the levels after the conversion!. This is my favorite BW conversion method!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
