You will not need software until you have finished a couple of semesters of photography ... the first classes use cameras like 35mm SLR or medium format.

By the time you get into digital photography, the technology will be much further a long, so for now save your money until you have the skills necessary to operate a fully adjustable camera. And you will be able to buy the necessary software at a student discount (at this time Photoshop Extended is the newest software available)

A camera, any camera, doesn't matter which, and just take loads of pics (much cheaper with digital) cos that's how you'll learn. Plenty of time for the 'Best' ones later when you've got some experience and learnt basic skills.
