It is so much better, I can't even tell you how much. But the Phantom is NOT "HOT" like Gerard Butler so I hope you don't even expect that at all. He is a terribly deformed man who murders people and blackmails them for the love of his life.
Of course in the movie they can take you places where you can't go in the theatre...but having it performed live in front of you is an experience beyond breathtaking. I have seen the show on Broadway countless times and I sob hysterically each time because its so heartbreaking and beautiful.
The movie and the show are not at all alike, though. and its not a play :) its a musical lol...there is hardly any spoken dialouge, it's all sung...and its so much more operetic sounding on the stage.

PS the Phantoms name is ERIK not ERIC.

Honestly, I LOVE the first couple movies, I think nothing compares--but then, there is no sound, so its not for everyone. The broadway is amazing, and its really a wonderful production--I think its worth the money, but I don't think its better than some of the old movies.

Not related: Have you ever read "Phantom" by Susan Kay? Its an amazing book that follows the life of Eric. I suggest you check it out being a phantom buff and all.

If you get the chance to go see the stage production then do so, you will love. it is far superior to any movie. I saw it in Edinburgh at the Playhouse which is by no means the biggest or best version that you will see but was completely blown away by it. Having only seen 4 stage production of anything this was the best.

way better in person than the movie. go if u get the chance.

omg the play is soooooooooooo much better than the movie!
good luck!
