While the great movie "Vincent and Theo" explores many aspects of the Van Gogh brothers' relationship, anyone interested in the world of painting or the relationship between siblings in general and Vincent and Theo in particular Letters of Vincent and Theo Van Gogh is a MUST read!
Vincent Van Gogh, who turned to art after a short stint as a minister, was a great letter writer, using them to not only ply his brother for money and supplies but to explain his theories of color, form, subject, brushwork, etc.
We learn from the letters so much of Vincents paintings and his rural existence, as well as the world of Parisian art dealers in whose circle Theo moved.
The book shows, through the collected letters, the great love between the brothers. Though Theo had a small family to provide for he could never deny brother Vincent. Theo, alone in appreciating Vincent's work in the art world at that time, encouraged him and was a wonderful sounding board for his ideas.
The world is indebted to Theo's widow (whose name, alas, eludes me at this moment) for keeping and cataloging his paintings and putting them out into the world.

May I suggest you either buy or rent a copy of Robert Altman's wonderful masterpiece of a film called "Vincent & Theo"?

I could probably try to explain some of the bond between them but couldn't do it nearly as much justice as this film does.
