Well in some cases they dint have scanners to scan the pics they would like to use.Either that or they are kids that are computer illiterate I'm not sure

Well, I don't have a picture of myself because honestly I spend infinitely more time on the other side of the camera.
If I put my real photo up the site would close.
It's all a matter of personal preference, I think. some for security, others prefer creating avatars, and some like using different images (cats, dogs, celebs, ect.). I don't think it's a case of being ashamed, but more for security (especially with women... too many immature idiot guys out there who will look at a picture and hound girls to death).
Avatars are a creative way to express yourself, be it a true representation physically or an ideal representation. Real pic or not, I don't mind it at all.
Personally I like a little privacy and I don't care if strangers on yahoo think I'm pretty or not.
It is fun and easier to change up my Avatar if I feel like it.
