All I use is a business card with flash pointing up but it is always better to bounce flash over shoulder and spill the light forward. The videos on this website are great and the guy that he refers to in some of these videos has this website:

I highly recommend this site. I suggest you try some of these cheap alternatives and if you are not happy, then try the Gary Fong.

The FongDong is a handy tool, you'll either love it or hate it. It is great for environmental portraits if you're close enough, It does work as advertised, but eats flash power and is rather bulky and makes some flashes droop. I'm a Nikon person, but the 430ex flash might be a little underpowered in some circumstances.

You might check eBay. It seems to be about $40 almost everywhere. I bought mine from his site. It comes with a short instructional video, which is actually an advertisement. It took me quite a bit of practice to feel comfortable with it, but in the right situation I find it a valuable aid.
