You might also want to check out the Academy of Art University in San Fran, CA. I've heard nothing but positive comments about that school. Some even said it's the Harvard for Graphic Design. Here's the site: www.academyart.edu

Gonna say NSCAD http://nscad.ca/ not just because I am a student there, it is the oldest post secondary in North America specializing in the arts. Founded in the early 1800's. And yes a lot has changed since then, check their graduates list, you will find all sorts of famous artists, say Andy Warhol for an example

Don't limit yourself to just CA or NY, consider RISD, Rhode Island School of Design, one of the top design schools in the country.
