Seurat had a mistress named Madeline Knoblock. In Sondheim's musical "Sunday in the Park with George," the woman in front with the umbrella and the monkey is portrayed by his mistress in that story. The character is named "Dot"--probably as a joke to tie in with the painting style.

The woman in front is his mistress "Dot."

Seraut was a pointilist. Meaning, instead of brush strokes, he used tiny little points of paint, dots, if you will to make up the painting. When you stand far from it, you cannot tell, but when you are right upon it, you can see the different dots of paint.
