Beautifully colored and meticulously detailed, Salvador Dali’s “Landscape with Butterflies” exudes an unnerving ambiguity about its subjects’ scale, proportion, and proximity to other objects in the painting. This is perhaps the least ambiguous of Dali's paintings. If one thinks of the thematic complexity in "Premonition of Civil War" or "The Persistence of Memory" or the Narcissus one whose name eludes me at this late hour, this fits squarely into the confines of its title.
Considered by many of the Surrealists as a flamboyant media horse, Salavador Dali did have a very exact manner in rendering his subjects. While his work does a fair job of illuminated the human psyche in dreamstate, I find Rene Magritte and Giorgio deChirico better suited as guides to the hypnogogic shadowlands.
