always use pencil for sketching. you waste less paper when you screw up. not to sound harsh or anything, we all screw up.pencils i recommend: no specific brand, but get a variety: 2H, HB, B, 2B, 5B, 8B, ETC. if u don't know what those are, look at the end of the pencil where the eraser should be, it'll tell you. H stands for hard - less pigment goes onto the paper, and it makes a light line. the higher the number in front of H the lighter it will be. B stands for bold. more pigment goes onto the paper. the higher the number before B, the darker it will be.

First part: I like them all and which one I use depends on what my objective is... There is no "best" they work well to produce totally different things.
2nd part:
If the sketch is going to be a finished piece in a rough form, I choose pen. If I am working out a variety of compositions and the sketch is for a piece I will later do - pencil.

I like to use either a 4b pencil to give more depth to sketches or a charcoal stick....both work well, but work has to be protected after doing due to rub off. : )

It always depends of you, what you prefer. There is no best material. I personally prefer pencil, but I use reed pen and black ink mostly.
