Logo Idea? Feedback?

Question:I've been asked (among a few other designers) to create a new logo (both for the website and t-shirts) for my college newspaper.

The newspaper is called The Colonnade. It's a public liberal arts school.

These are a few designs I've created so far.

I've been asked what message I'm trying to portray. If you have a symbol or icon idea that would help, any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Anyone familiar with Photoshop could contribute greatly since this is the program I use to design.
