Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland in 1853. His father was a fundamentalist preacher with very small churches. He referred to his mother as a poor old woman. He left home for good at the age of 28, and began painting in the south of France in the city of Arles. He never sold but one painting in his life. He only got $80.00 for it, and it was called "Red Vineyards." His brother, Theodore, wrote letters back and forth to him and furnished him with art supplies and money to live on. This went on for 10 years.
