Position:Home>Visual Arts> My Nikon D40 isn't focusing when I zoom in?

Question:My Nikon D40 is focused just fine when the lens is zoomed out to normal size, but in every mode when I zoom in with the zoom ring it gets blurry. Now this is natural, but when I push the shoot button halfway down, it doesn't focus on the subject. I've looked in the manual, but thats useless. There is a page that talks about Focus mode and how to adjust it, but the area that is on the display is a greyed out button, so I can't change it.

Any solutions?

i think your setting is on manual. i assume you regularly use automatic lens focus... okay... so on your lens, there should be a little switch that has an "A" and "M" in white letters (look for it carefully). right below there is a little switch and move it to the side that says "A". this should solve your problem hopefully!

Make sure that you have your focus choice to either S (Single auto-focus) or (Continuous) C, not M (Manual)

try taking a few steps back from what you are trying to photograph. The manuals don't tell you that when you are too close to your subject with a zoom lens, the focus goes stupid. or, try zooming out and then walking closer to your subject, if possible. when transitioning from manual to auto focus, I often found this a problem to which I had to adjust.
