I love Nikon, Canon is a great brand too. At 14 I was using a Nikon film SLR camera, and loved it (I still do). You might want to start with a point and shoot (a couple $100) instead of an SLR (over $1000), to see if it's something you want to do and pursue and then you can upgrade to different cameras over time.
I have a Canon point and shoot, which works great, and the new one's now have high megapixels, faster shutter releases, etc. They are a great beginner camera and are incredibly handy because they are sooo small.
My main camera is a Nikon D80 DSLR, it was about $1200 with a kit lense. It's a great beginner camera into the SLR field (more of a pro camera). And in a year or so I'll upgrade to a higher up camera.

To tell you everything you need to know about photography would take forever......so here are a few things....
Take a photo class at your school, it's the best way to learn the basics.
Look at photographs and try to figure out how it was taken and if you could do something like it
Look at the photographers, you can never do this enough.... Steven McCurry, Richard Avedon, Ansel Adams, The Bechers, David Hockney, Kenneth Josephson, are some of my favorites, but there are a ton
Learn....apeture, shutter speed, depth of field

So I hope that gives you a good start. Most of all get out and photograph! Have fun!

There is no "best" camera, other than your eyes. I've taken killer pictures with a home-made pin-hole camera, a discarded 1913 box camera, and a manual Pentax MX. I've taken lots of crappy pictures with a modern digital.

Photography is less about the device, and more about the method and the artist. I would suggest getting to the library (real books sink in more) and checking out anything by Charles Swedlund. He wrote some excellent text books that explain the theory of light manipulation, and how shutter/aperture/depth of field, etc. work. It's also inspiring to look at the work of masters.

If you understand the basic principles, it won't matter what camera you have, and all of the principles of photography that work with film also work with digital cameras.

Set a goal to learn all you can about the theory and principles, and I'll bet you have great pictures soon, and that you'll have ten cameras by the time you're 24, and you'll love each one for their specific character and feel that they give to a picture. I regret I did not get involved with it when I was as young as you.

(For surf photos, you'll want high shutter speeds, quality telephoto lenses, and a fast eye. Me, I just did flowers and birds with a tripod and Kodachrome 25. Good luck. Photography's great fun, and will enrich your view of life. For digital camera/editing, or buying tips, check out http://www.komando.com/ )

Its not the camera its the photographer using the camera. its just a tool. You can take just as interesting pictures with an old Brownie box camera as you can with the latest Digital SLR. There is no way anyone could tell you everything there is to know about photography, I learn something new about it everyday and I do it professionally. Start by reading books about photography and look at some of the photography magazines. But the best way to learn is get out and shoot everyday. Learn from each shoot, correct what went wrong and remember what you did right.

The camera you use isn't as important as what you have upstairs and how creative you are. Sure, there are cameras that will give you larger file sizes or have more features that might lead to better images. Visit a locally owned camera shop that has professionals who sell cameras all the time. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

If you are thinking about photography as a career, start using the Internet and researching good photographers. One young man is Joey Lawrence, an 18 year old who has rocked the photography community. http://joeyl.com/

In addition to learning how to use a camera you will need to learn how to use Photoshop. This is an image editing software that is used by all professional photographers to edit/enhance their images.

Take art courses and learn composition and color harmony. Go to museums and study art.

Whatever you decide to do, become the best you can in your given field. In any job, do more than is expected of you. Arrive early and stay late. Attitude is everything! Study hard and practice, practice, practice.
